There were a lot of good things in this launch of a new trilogy by Mark Lawrence. However, this first book tried to do too much and left the story feeling like it had overstayed its welcome.

As a first book in a new series for a debut author, I thought that this story was just okay. I enjoyed many parts of the story and the reading experience, but I didn't feel connected to the characters and I didn't get sucked into the world.
